Ezio Raimondi, TWENTIETH CENTURY AND AFTER

Subtitle: CONSIDERATIONS ON A CENTURY OF LITERATURE. Roma, Carocci, 2003

Raimondi illustrates how modernity in the sublime manifests Itself Within a framework of "delightful horror"

"[...] the light is being undermined by chaos of darkness and bellezza si incrocia con la dissonanza e l’informe, con l’essere nudo dell’uomo tra natura e storia, istinto e cultura, quanto più egli discopre nel flusso discontinuo della temporalità, anche in ciò che è domestico e quotidiano, la fatalità vertiginosa del proprio vuoto senza parola” (p. 28).

Discontinuity rather than linear chronology characterizes literature in the 20th century: “l”avventura letteraria del Novecento assomiglia a un fascio di segmenti discontinui, renitenti all”ordine univoco della linearità cronologica” (p. 35).

He mentions Curtius’ views on the sense of tradition in European literature until the 18th century. In agreement with Curtius, Raimondi, too, sees Goethe as the last traditional and the first modern author. Modernity is articulated in a new literary system by fragmentation and mannerism as it may be seen in Joyce’s and T.S. Eliot’s work.

Multiplicity, as defined by Calvino in LEZIONI AMERICANE, is another important aspect of modern literature which tends to be encyclopedic in an open way.ù

History and experiments are interrelated:

“Più la parola letteraria scava in se stessa, nelle fibre segrete della sua figura sonora, e più si apre al movimento sfaccettato della temporalità, alle forze in atto di una situazione storica. La presenza del tempo umano e del suo travaglio è always noticeable in the words of literature, provided they bear the anxiety and almost at the bottom of the obsession with hard surfaces of life "(p. 59-60).

Prophetic authors as wells as heroic characters disappeared or changed connotations in the 20th century:

"How to multiple solutions of the hermeneutics requires the writer to tell the waiver to the role of the legislature or the prophet, so long a parallel path in the twentieth century is consumed or transformed the traditional idea of \u200b\u200bheroism. In the labyrinth of the century, under the sign left dell'atrocità and catastrophe, the word literature can increasingly difficult to portray in its emphasis on pathos heroism. Or maybe the memory of heroism may survive only in distorted image of degradation and distress, as they discover, after Dostoevsky's underground man, so what Kafka Céline "(p. 99).

Minimalism, and the Relationship Between unity and diversity, But Also a still important role of literature, and Especially of the novel, are Aspects of the Most recent phase of globalization When literature is based on a "genuine pluralism" (p. 143 ), and, Even More Than Previously, "inevitably Weltliteratur" (p. 142).

On literature as communication Between the author and the reader, Raimondi writes:

"The language of the written page allows what might be called the transit experience, its transmission within a common framework which in itself is already an overcoming loneliness to a common potential, which, however, assumes contours unconventional, just because you give from the loneliness in its full sense. As has been written, we are always on the way into the language, since it is related to what happened or could happen, our memories, then plunges us into a multi-universe, made up of other experiences, in which aspects of the circumstances give a sense of life, capable surprising, at the same time that hurts, even physically, in the vividness of our body feel. Experience you can do in the word is precisely in the transfer to another at the same time also implies the receipt of something new "(p. 127).
